Baker Mayfield becomes an immediate alpha

All eyes will be on Baker Mayfield throughout training camp after the Carolina Panthers pulled the trigger on a trade to get the quarterback from the Cleveland Browns. This is yet another gamble at the most important position on the field, but it does provide those in power with a better chance of progressing in a make-or-break third season for head coach Matt Rhule.

Mayfield regressed last season after guiding Cleveland to the playoffs in 2020. How much of this was to do with a torn labrum in his non-throwing shoulder is debatable and there are also concerns about the Oklahoma product’s attitude within the locker room.

Reports from the Browns stated they felt Mayfield was “childish and immature“. Something that won’t fly in Carolina with some big personalities already established.

The former No. 1 overall selection should be motivated to silence the doubters in 2022. Mayfield must produce the goods in practice, pick up Ben McAdoo’s system quickly, and also become a source of inspiration that other players can get behind.

That’s a lot to ask over the next few weeks. But the Panthers opted to wait and get a good deal for Mayfield rather than overpaying for a player surplus to requirements earlier in the offseason.

Mayfield has the fire within him to achieve these objectives. If he can immediately become a team alpha, then the Panthers are going to benefit as a result.
