Sam Darnold embracing Carolina Panthers QB competition

Things don’t look especially promising for Sam Darnold entering training camp. A disappointing first campaign with the Carolina Panthers resulted in two new quarterbacks coming into the fold, which means the USC product has a fight on his hands making the 53-man roster if the coaching staff opts to take two signal-callers through once again.

Darnold might be getting paid handsomely after the Panthers triggered his fifth-year option. But it appears as if the No. 3 overall selection in 2018 is embracing the competition for places, which he has yet to experience since entering the league.

After telling reporters that he is “cool” with Baker Mayfield following the trade. However, there was a seriousness to his comments surrounding the battle and what could be at stake when the time for final cuts arrives.

"“I’m sure when we’re competing and things start rolling in camp, it’s gonna be fun. At end of the day, it’s a business and we take our craft seriously. But off the field, me and Baker (Mayfield) are cool.”"

Darnold’s got his work cut out, there’s no getting away from that. But the fact Carolina is on the hook for so much money where the quarterback is concerned could indicate they’ll give him every chance of reaffirming his status as the team’s No. 1, however unlikely that might be.
