What were some major observations to take from Carolina Panthers quarterback Baker Mayfield’s first practice with the team in training camp?

After months of speculation surrounding his future, Baker Mayfield finally participated in his first practice as a member of the Carolina Panthers. This represents a fresh start for the signal-caller following a high-profile trade from the Cleveland Browns and something that’s provided sections of the fanbase with renewed hope things can finally start moving forward in a positive fashion next season.

Mayfield has a lot of information to take on in a short space of time. The Panthers are also keen for there to be a real quarterback competition between the Oklahoma product, Sam Darnold, and third-round pick Matt Corral for depth chart standing.

One suspects that Mayfield is the clear frontrunner right now. It’s also a relief for the player to focus on football once again after so much away from the field casting a shadow across the offseason period.

With this in mind, here are four major observations from Mayfield’s first official Panthers practice in Spartanburg.

Carolina Panthers QB Baker Mayfield looked relaxed on Day 1

After so much scrutiny and accusations about his character this offseason, Baker Mayfield certainly welcomed a return to the practice field based on his demeanor. The quarterback looked relaxed and in good spirits for the opening day of camp, which is the first step in what will hopefully turn into a successful stint with the Carolina Panthers in 2022.

For everything said about Mayfield before and after the trade, one thing that’s not in question is the player’s love of football. He is passionate and demands nothing but excellence from himself and those around him, which is one of the primary reasons why the Panthers made this move before training camp.

Things will get more competitive in the days ahead, so keeping this mindset is essential for Mayfield in pursuit of making a bigger impression as camp rolls on.
