Carolina Panthers integrated Baker Mayfield slowly

The Carolina Panthers have always stated that there will be a true quarterback competition in training camp despite Baker Mayfield’s arrival. Sam Darnold is counting $18.85 million against the salary cap and Matt Corral was drafted No. 94 overall, so it’s not hard to see why the coaching staff wants everyone to get their fair share of reps.

However, the Panthers didn’t acquire Mayfield for him to sit on the sidelines. Darnold’s struggles were there for all to see in 2021 once Christian McCaffrey went down and Corral might need a little extra time before assuming command long term.

Mayfield worked primarily with the team’s second unit over the first day of camp, with Darnold taking the first-team reps. Again, this isn’t entirely unexpected and something that will likely change on Day 2.

Integrating Mayfield slowly on Day 1 was an anticipated call. But there isn’t much in the way of time before Mayfield is expected to start for the Panthers in their Week 1 clash against his former team at Bank of America Stadium.

Fans were obviously clamoring to see Mayfield with the top-tier playmakers. Working with the second unit was a chance for the quarterback to find his feet in the stifling heat of Spartanburg.
