Carolina Panthers’ young defenders stepping up
The Carolina Panthers have invested a lot of draft capital on getting the defense younger since Matt Rhule took charge. Although there are still some established veterans within the group, much more is expected of those still finding their feet at the next level in 2022.
Most of the individuals concerned have flashed promise throughout their respective careers. Asking them to become consistent from further up the depth chart is a big ask, but one those in power feel they are ready for.
This is evident across the defense, but especially on the defensive line. Yetur Gross-Matos, Derrick Brown, and Brian Burns should form a productive trio if everything goes well, but replicating Haason Reddick’s pass-rushing prowess is a monumental task.
Players like Frankie Luvu and perhaps even rookie Brandon Smith will provide the energy alongside Shaq Thompson at the second level. And the Panthers’ secondary is loaded with dynamic talent that could thrive further under the guidance of Steve Wilks.
Hopes are high for the defense to go from good to great, according to Rhule. But there is a slight fear that asking more of young players could blow up in the team’s face when it’s all said and done.
