Carolina Panthers MLB becoming the weak link

For all the positives on defense, there is one potential complication that stands out above all else. Something that’s played a significant role in the organization’s regression for good measure.

The Carolina Panthers are on their third starting middle linebacker in as many seasons since franchise legend Luke Kuechly called it a day. This was obviously a shock that came with a period of transition, but there is a chance the team’s current options will become a weak link once again.

Damien Wilson looks set to assume starting responsibilities despite an offseason arrest hanging over the former Super Bowl winner. Cory Littleton could assist in coverage situations and Brandon Smith’s arrival during the draft comes with some long-term upside if the Penn State product puts everything together.

If this trio doesn’t impose themselves, it’s something opposing offenses will exploit at every possible opportunity. It will also ensure that the middle linebacker spot becomes one of Carolina’s top priorities in 2023.

Shaq Thompson and Frankie Luvu should provide a lively outside tandem that can raise performance levels. But the Panthers are not in a position to be carrying anybody given the need to win next season.
