How did Carolina Panthers quarterback Baker Mayfield fare during his second official training camp practice at Wofford College?
The tempo is intensifying as the Carolina Panthers continue their preparations for the 2022 season in training camp. Players and coaches are familiarizing themselves with what’s expected during the upcoming campaign and competition for places are extremely high following a strong period of recruitment from the front office earlier this year.
This extra urgency is coming across over the first two days. Although the Panthers have been keen to bed the group in slowly thanks in no small part to the humidity that normally envelopes Wofford College in Spartanburg over the summer.
A rejuvenated Matt Rhule has been watching things unfold closely. It’s also been great to see the team’s new coaches standing their mark on proceedings in pursuit of better fortunes and there is also the presence of quarterback Baker Mayfield adding another sense of intrigue.
With this in mind, here are four major observations from Mayfield’s second practice with the Panthers in camp.
Major Observation No. 1
Carolina Panthers gave Baker Mayfield more responsibility
Baker Mayfield took a back seat to Sam Darnold on the first day of practice. That was not the case on Day 2.
The Carolina Panthers put their new acquisition with the first-team unit throughout practice. An anticipated move as the coaching staff wants a good look at both veterans before making any decision on the starter final.
Matt Rhule stated that this will be the trend in the “immediate future“. But in all honesty, the sooner Mayfield is given the keys to the kingdom, the better his and Carolina’s chances will be.
