Baker Mayfield – Carolina Panthers QB

This is probably harsh on Baker Mayfield, who has had little time to work with his new teammates and coaches. But it’s so far been very up and down with some splash plays mixed in with turnovers and off-target throws.

While you would say overall Sam Darnold looked more solid over the first week of Carolina Panthers training camp, he’s also had a four-week head start over Mayfield in terms of learning the playbook. It’s important for fans to remember that this is only Week 1 and we’re going to see teething problems with the Oklahoma product initially.

As we’ve seen throughout Darnold’s career, he looks great throwing the ball in shorts. But when the pads come on it’s a different story.

One would expect Mayfield to begin outperforming Darnold soon. Some of which we saw on Monday as the signal-caller began to click with his skill players after encountering timing issues over the first few practices.

One positive note for Mayfield has been his blossoming relationship with star D.J. Moore. We saw that on his first day throwing with the first team as the Heisman Trophy winner hit the former Maryland man for two red zone touchdowns.

A gripe on Moore during his career so far has been a lack of touchdowns. Cultivating a good partnership with Mayfield could change this in a big way.
