Can Baker Mayfield bring pride back to the Carolina Panthers?
Baker Mayfield is the latest swing by the Carolina Panthers under center after they finally struck a deal with the Cleveland Browns. This obviously comes with some risks attached but waiting gave the organization a pretty good deal for a player that led his previous employers to their first playoff victory since 1994 during the 2020 season.
Things didn’t go according to plan for Mayfield last time around. But one could easily excuse this due to a torn labrum in his non-throwing shoulder suffered in Week 2.
Cleveland’s controversial pursuit of Deshaun Watson was successful and meant Mayfield was surplus to requirements. Joining the Panthers gives him an instant chance to start again and shut his doubters up once and for all.
It’s going to be a crash course in learning Ben McAdoo’s system and developing chemistry with his teammates. Mayfield has the competitiveness to take this challenge on with his customary determination, with an increased sense of urgency something else the player can put to good use.
Mayfield has the arm strength to bring the best out of some gifted playmakers. There is also Christian McCaffrey’s presence in the backfield to call upon when required behind an offensive line that’s expected to make strides.
Fans just want to be inspired after so much disappointment. If Mayfield can bring some pride back to the franchise, it would be a huge step in the right direction.
