What were some major observations from Carolina Panthers quarterback Baker Mayfield’s sixth practice with the team in training camp?

There was a different Baker Mayfield on the opening day of padded practices. Although the Carolina Panthers quarterback worked with the second string, he was clearly more fluid and seems to be gradually building up confidence within Ben McAdoo’s system to separate himself from others looking to claim the starting job.

Obviously, there will be ups and downs. The Panthers brought Mayfield on board late in the offseason to ensure they got high value for the Oklahoma product, but he is definitely picking things up quickly and establishing himself as a vocal member of the locker room for good measure.

Monday’s session was encouraging. But Mayfield must also show enough in the way of consistency to convince people this was the right call to make for immediate progression in 2022.

With this in mind, here are four major observations from Mayfield’s sixth Panthers practice in training camp.

Baker Mayfield’s turn with the Carolina Panthers 1s

After an outstanding practice working with the second unit on Monday, Baker Mayfield got the opportunity to familiarize himself with his primary pass-catchers once again. This also saw the quarterback come up against better defenders, but he acquitted himself well overall despite throwing an interception when Frankie Luvu jumped one particular route for a stunning pick.

The more time Mayfield gets with the 1s, the better his chances will be when the real action arrives. Matt Rhule stated the reps will be split throughout the week, but Sam Darnold’s indifferent production and poor film throughout his career indicate his time could be hanging by a thread.
