Baker Mayfield and Robbie Anderson finally clicked

It’s been a slow start for Robbie Anderson over the first few practices. The wide receiver is still picking up the offense after missing most of the voluntary workouts this spring, but there were some real signs of life on Tuesday working alongside Baker Mayfield.

The Carolina Panthers got a glimpse of what the duo could produce in a competitive setting during individual drills and when it came to 11-on-11. And there was one particular play that drew gasps from those in attendance, with Mayfield dropping a deep bomb right into Anderson’s hands under pressure that was easily the best play of camp to date.

This chemistry is something that caught the eye of head coach Matt Rhule, who was pleased with the connection while also pondering what the defense should be doing to prevent such a play.

"“As the head coach, I’m always like, ‘Great to see them connect. Hey, why did they get behind us? So there’s always a duality to that, but that was good to see those guys connect.”"

Much was made of Anderson’s comments about Mayfield’s potential arrival before the trade was confirmed. Even if the wideout claimed it was blown out of proportion and had everything to do with his loyalty to Sam Darnold at the time.

It’s taken a while, but the tandem could be a real asset if things keep progressing in this manner.
