4 major observations from Baker Mayfield’s eighth Panthers practice
By Dean Jones
What were some major observations from Carolina Panthers quarterback Baker Mayfield’s eighth practice with the team in training camp?
After a rest day for the Carolina Panthers on Thursday, players and staff got back down to business in training camp as preparations continue for the 2022 season. It’s been fascinating to see things unfolding over the past two weeks, with Baker Mayfield’s presence following his high-profile trade from the Cleveland Browns bringing a tremendous sense of intrigue.
It was a slow burn early on for Mayfield. But he’s stood out considerably ever since in Spartanburg and is well set to assume starting responsibilities for the Panthers in Week 1 against the organization that drafted him No. 1 overall.
Mayfield has the demeanor and charisma that’s gone down extremely well so far. However, the jury is still out as to how much the signal-caller can shift the needle for a team that is projected to be among the bottom-feeders once again by most in the national media.
With that being said, here are some major observations from Mayfield’s eighth Panthers practice at Wofford College on Friday.
Major Observation No. 1
Carolina Panthers getting improved confidence from Baker Mayfield
It’s been great to see Baker Mayfield’s confidence growing with every passing practice with the Carolina Panthers. One could have forgiven the signal-caller for being a little down in the dumps after an offseason full of uncertainty and question marks, but his quick adjustment speaks volumes about the player’s character and determination to succeed.
There is more scrutiny on Mayfield than almost any other player on the Panthers in camp. Something the former No. 1 overall selection is more than used to given the polarizing opinions on his production before and during his time in the league.
Mayfield is looking confident both in his demeanor off the field and within Ben McAdoo’s scheme. It’s not perfect, but integrating quickly is only going to help his chances when push comes to shove.
