What were some major observations from Carolina Panthers quarterback Baker Mayfield’s ninth practice with the organization in training camp?

There was an enormous sense of excitement on Saturday morning as the Carolina Panthers rose early for a team scrimmage in training camp. This was the first real gameday environment that the team’s organized throughout their time at Wofford College so far, which saw intensity increase and plays scrutinized more than ever before.

Of course, most eyes were on Baker Mayfield, as they have been throughout camp. The signal-caller has made an impressive start to life with the Panthers, integrating well into Ben McAdoo’s system and providing confidence not seen under center for some time.

All signs point to Mayfield assuming starting responsibilities when the time comes. But the Panthers are making him earn it despite Sam Darnold’s production in 2021 offering little encouragement.

With this in mind, here were some major observations from Mayfield’s ninth Panthers practice at Wofford College in Spartanburg.

Baker Mayfield’s impressive poise

It’s been a gradual progression from Baker Mayfield throughout his early stint with the Carolina Panthers. This second week has been highly impressive overall and one thing that stood out to those in attendance was the signal-caller’s ability to get off his first read and go through his progressions efficiently.

Mayfield’s chemistry with the likes of Christian McCaffrey seems to be going well and the rust has been shaken off. But there is little doubt splitting time with Sam Darnold has the scope to impact cohesion when competitive games arrive.

That’ll be on the coaching staff when it’s all said and done. However, it was refreshing to hear that Mayfield’s poise under center is coming along nicely.
