6 key observations from Panthers 2022 training camp practice Day 9

Patriots week could decide Carolina Panthers QB1 race
Fans who were hoping for the Carolina Panthers to name their starting quarterback in the immediate future might be out of luck. Baker Mayfield and Sam Darnold once again split reps during Saturday’s scrimmage, with head coach Matt Rhule outlining that this could go on for a good while yet before anything is set in stone.
Everyone anticipates it will be Mayfield under center when he takes on his former team in Week 1. But there is also Darnold’s fully guaranteed $18.85 million complicating matters and Rhule’s pride, which might get in the way when push comes to shove.
The ex-Baylor coach stated that joint practices with the New England Patriots could be the deciding factor. Going up against legendary coach Bill Belichick will also be a solid measuring stick as to where the Panthers are at currently.
"“I’m not putting a timetable on the quarterback position until after we get back from the Patriots week. The Patriots week is a true litmus test for us. That will really show us where guys are.”"
Darnold threw the football 28 times on Saturday. If Mayfield wins the job and timing remains an issue, then implementing this method just to keep last year’s marquee acquisition in the spotlight is going to come with severe criticism.
