Matt Rhule’s college tendencies creep in again
In fairness to Matt Rhule, there has been a noticeable shift in approach this offseason. Something that was almost a necessity considering what’s transpired over the first two years under his leadership.
However, Rhule’s college tendencies crept in once again on Saturday after he took issue with the celebrations following Baker Mayfield’s deep touchdown to wide receiver Rashard Higgins.
Higgins is a flamboyant individual and upon crossing the line, rolled out the red carpet for a celebration that clearly infuriated the former Temple man. Rhule was also displeased with the wideout stretching the football over the line and made the offense run as a result.
"“Great play by Hig. He made a great touchdown catch. But I wanted to make sure they all understood that we don’t win if we don’t protect the football.”"
What the benefit of making professional players run gassers is, remains a mystery. These are not youngsters looking to make their way and the whole situation just looked messy even though Rhule probably had the right intentions.
It also saw the Panthers draw more skepticism on social media, with Super Bowl winner Andrew Whitworth among those highlighting how comedic the scenario appeared to many.
