Baker Mayfield – Carolina Panthers QB

The opening week of training camp was all about timing and shaking off the rust for Baker Mayfield. Once that was accomplished, there was a notable shift in the quarterback’s demeanor and production.

Mayfield enjoyed an outstanding second week of practice, picking up the system well despite the limited timeframe and gradually emerging as a leader within the locker room. The Carolina Panthers might not be officially naming him as their starter just yet, but the Oklahoma product is running away with things based on performance levels.

Making simple things complicated has been the hallmark of Matt Rhule’s tenure so far. While the competition for places is commendable, giving reps to Sam Darnold is only going to hinder the team’s chances if they are planning to move forward with Mayfield.

There’s been something different about Mayfield. His poise under center is evident, the velocity on his throws is outstanding, and the signal-caller is also developing a rapport with Carolina’s primary pass-catchers has also progressed significantly.

Darnold is having a decent camp. One that could be enough for another organization to make a trade providing the Panthers pick up most of his fully guaranteed $18.85 million.

But this is Mayfield’s team now. It’s that simple, really.
