Carolina Panthers not ready to name QB1 yet

Even though Baker Mayfield and Sam Darnold were in street clothes for practice, it did not stop the quarterback competition from being discussed when head coach Matt Rhule went in front of the media. Almost inevitably, the former Baylor man remained resolute in his belief this was an ongoing evaluation with no winner determined just yet.

Mayfield has made an incredibly positive impression in a short space of time. He’s integrated well within the system and built confidence quickly, which has many believing he’ll be the man under center when the Carolina Panthers take the field against the Cleveland Browns in Week 1.

This leaves a problem where Darnold’s concerned. The USC product has enjoyed a strong camp of his own, but the Panthers have enough bad tape to suggest he cannot be counted upon when push comes to shove.

Rhule stated that if they knew right now, it would be confirmed. But the plan was always to evaluate further when joint practices with the New England Patriots come to a conclusion.

"“I think it’s an ongoing process. When we know we know. If we knew for sure we’d go on and say it…I think it’s been healthy for our team, the staff and I think it’s been done the right way. I’m pleased with where it’s at.”"

It would be a major surprise if Mayfield didn’t win the job. And it’s hard to look at this camp and not think he provides the Panthers with a better chance to win next season.
