What were some major observations from Carolina Panthers quarterback Matt Corral’s first training camp in Spartanburg?

With the Carolina Panthers giving their first and second units a well-deserved day off on the final day of training camp, it was time for those further down the pecking order to take center stage. This meant substantial reps for rookie quarterback Matt Corral, who’s been a keen onlooker throughout as Baker Mayfield and Sam Darnold battle it out for the No. 1 spot.

Corral’s left a good impression during limited reps so far. His lightning-fast release and arm strength have been evident, even if head coach Matt Rhule stated that the Ole Miss product has a long way to go before taking over the reins.

This was a good opportunity for Corral to get time under center before his first official taste of NFL action this Saturday at the Washington Commanders. The first step in what will hopefully become a successful career for the third-round selection.

With that being said, here are some major observations from Corral during his first training camp with the Panthers.

Carolina Panthers QB Matt Corral showed the right mentality

Many thought that Matt Corral could emerge as a sneaky contender to win the starting job in camp. But it was clear from pretty early on that wasn’t going to be the case.

The Carolina Panthers are taking their time with the third-round pick, bringing him along slowly while learning what it takes to be a successful signal-caller at the next level. Although frustrating for some, it might be the best thing in the long run.

Baker Mayfield and Sam Darnold took center stage during a battle that the Oklahoma product is clearly winning. But there remains hope Corral can become the team’s long-term option.
