Carolina Panthers QB Matt Corral has a lot to learn
The Carolina Panthers always had the future in mind when they drafted Matt Corral. His intangibles are absolutely off the charts in the right fit, but anyone expecting him to come in and immediately fill a starting spot was kidding themselves.
Besides, the Panthers have far too much at stake to bank their fortunes on a rookie quarterback. No matter how good Corral might become, Matt Rhule needs immediate assistance and this is exactly why Baker Mayfield was acquired from the Cleveland Browns.
Corral needs to work on key areas before further confidence in his abilities comes around. Most notably, there were some issues with decision-making during 7-on-7 and 11-on-11, which is not entirely unexpected coming up against NFL-caliber defenders on a daily basis.
Again, this is all part of the learning experience for Corral. Something that will give the player and his coaches a broader indication of what’s needed before potentially assuming command under center.
Getting Corral plenty of action in Carolina’s preseason games will also aid his initial progression considerably. There are sure to be some bumps in the road, but the signal-caller has the talent and heart needed to make a real go of things with people such as Ben McAdoo and Sean Ryan steering him on the right track.
