Phil Hoskins – Carolina Panthers DT
After flashing promise as a rookie in 2021, there was plenty who thought Phil Hoskins could establish himself further with additional experience under his belt. The former seventh-round selection took his time to adjust – which was not unexpected in the circumstances – but there were signs that the Carolina Panthers got themselves another late-round gem from a limited sample size.
Hoskins didn’t draw the attention of many in attendance at Wofford College, so it’s hard to gauge just how he’s getting on this offseason. The Panthers are extremely thin across the defensive line, so the prospect of further reinforcements coming on board cannot be ruled out if the right opportunity comes along.
This would obviously complicate Hoskins’ chances of making a bigger impression next season. The power and ability to generate pressure were there on occasions, but it’s clear that the player still has a significant amount of work ahead to stake a bigger claim for reps.
Carolina will get a clearer picture of how much Hoskins has come along in the preseason. And there should be a roster position in the offing providing there are no complications or significant regression.
Given the Panthers’ concerns in this area of the field, Hoskins might get an opportunity for more playing time if he provides the coaching staff with confidence in his abilities.
