What were some crucial observations to take from Carolina Panthers quarterback Sam Darnold’s second training camp at Wofford College?
The Carolina Panthers were keen to state there would be a true quarterback competition in training camp despite the high-profile trade for Baker Mayfield. This obviously left Sam Darnold with an uncertain future – to put it mildly – so it was intriguing to see how both signal-callers approached what turned out to be another intense few weeks in Spartanburg.
Darnold’s production in 2021 left the Panthers with no alternative other than to find reinforcements. Just where this leaves the USC product next season is undecided, with head coach Matt Rhule stating a formal winner won’t be determined until after their second preseason game at the New England Patriots.
It’s not been easy for Darnold, who’s also had to pick up a new scheme following the appointment of Ben McAdoo. He’s getting paid $18.85 million fully guaranteed either way, but the No. 3 overall selection in 2018 doesn’t want to go out with a whimper based on his performance levels.

Sam Darnold remained professional
It was almost inevitable that the Carolina Panthers were going to strengthen their options under center this offseason. Something that Sam Darnold was probably waiting for, too.
He’ll be the first to admit things weren’t good enough last season. But to Darnold’s credit, he’s approached this offseason with professionalism and this continued throughout his time at Wofford College.
Whether this will change all that much is unlikely. However, it’s a testament to Darnold’s character in the face of ongoing adversity.
