Carolina Panthers and Baker Mayfield looked sharper on Day 2

After an indifferent first joint practice on offense, the Carolina Panthers looked like a cohesive unit that responded well to adversity on Day 2. Baker Mayfield once again split reps with Sam Darnold, but with the USC product throwing three interceptions, it was left to the Heisman Trophy winner to conjure up some memorable highlights.

Mayfield had some errant throws. However, there were notable connections to the likes of D.J. Moore, Shi Smith, and former Cleveland Browns teammate Rashard Higgins that caught the eye behind some impressive protection over a heated session.

It was important for Mayfield to bounce back in the best way possible.

After arguably his worst practice since the opening week of training camp in Spartanburg, he demonstrated resolve to pick himself and his teammates up to get the better of a solid New England Patriots defensive unit. This represents another big step in the right direction.

There is no denying the fact Mayfield is picking up things much quicker than anticipated. Timing with his receivers and knowledge of Ben McAdoo’s scheme is improving all the time, which bodes extremely well for the quarterback as he looks to prove some doubters wrong in 2022.

Darnold also had some nice moments. But a few errors of judgment were in keeping with what we’ve seen from the former first-round pick throughout his career on game days.
