How much pressure is on Carolina Panthers offensive tackle Ikem Ekwonu during his first NFL season in 2022?

It took a while. And the Carolina Panthers made Ikem Ekwonu earn it throughout his first offseason with the team.

But head coach Matt Rhule finally confirmed Ekwonu as the Panthers‘ starting left tackle for the 2022 campaign.

This represents a positive step in the right direction for the No. 6 overall selection, who was brought on gradually by Carolina in camp and often played second fiddle on the blindside to Brady Christensen. While this has the scope to jeopardize continuity across the protection, maximizing competition at key positional groups was a strong ethos implemented by the Panthers, which they hope can bring out the best in each player once the regular season arrives.

It’s no secret how the Panthers have struggled to find consistency at one of the most important positions on offense since Jordan Gross hung up his cleats almost a decade ago. Cam Erving’s torrid run of form following his arrival in free agency meant this situation had to be rectified with a long-term option, which Ekwonu undoubtedly is after a standout college career.

The imposing blocker was the top prospect on Carolina’s board, so those in power didn’t hesitate when Ekwonu fell out of the top five and into their laps. His run blocking is nothing short of exceptional and should help enormously, with his physical traits also set to improve pass protection with additional refinement.

Carolina Panthers will ask a lot from Ikem Ekwonu in 2022

Rhule stated that getting Ekwonu reps in their preseason opener and throughout joint practices with the New England Patriots was invaluable for the rookie, who will be tasked with a significant amount right out of the gate and needs to hit the ground running.

"“We wanted him to go in a game and play, and then earn with his play. He played well in the game, so these are valuable reps for him. He had some plays that were good, there were some plays that weren’t very good probably. You’re going against (Matt) Judon. They’ve got good guys over there, so those are good reps for him.”"

Although the pressure on Ekwonu is high from an eager fanbase, that’s nothing compared to what he’ll see on the field.

The North Carolina State product will come up against some of the league’s best edge rushers during his first season in a professional environment. An immediate baptism of fire is also expected in Week 1 when Ekwonu clashes with Myles Garrett on his competitive debut.

Anyone who is expecting a smooth journey for Ekwonu might be out of luck.

There will be times of struggle and things will be far from easy. But if the player can provide an upgrade and also gradually assert his dominance, then that’s going to be enough for an offensive line that should be more consistent after a busy offseason of recruitment.

As for Ekwonu, he’s taking things one day at a time. Something that’s bringing about additional self-confidence in the system and his ability to make a lasting impression.

"“I’m very comfortable. I’ve been coached up since phase two (of camp), so I feel really good right now, just learning more and more of the technique, little details.”"

Hopes are high that Ekwonu can become a franchise player and a core foundational piece for future success. And the lineman’s relaxed demeanor coupled with fierce competitiveness is sure to give him every chance.
