4 Panthers players in danger of being cut after preseason Week 2
By Dean Jones
Which Carolina Panthers players are in danger of being cut after the team’s preseason Week 2 loss at the New England Patriots?
With almost every starter sitting out for the Carolina Panthers during their preseason Week 2 contest at the New England Patriots, it was a chance for those further down the depth chart to stake a claim for perhaps the final time.
The result didn’t go Carolina’s way, which wasn’t entirely unexpected considering New England played their starters throughout the first half. However, the Panthers will now have a much clearer indication of who to bring through onto the 53-man roster or even some practice squad candidates.
One expects the starters to see considerable time on the field in Carolina’s final warmup fixture at home to the Buffalo Bills next Friday. The Panthers could even name Baker Mayfield as the starter before then, even though Matt Rhule wasn’t ready to confirm anything after the game at Gillette Stadium.
Without further ado, we picked out four Panthers players who are in danger of being cut after preseason Week 2.
Player No. 1
John Lovett – Carolina Panthers RB
The running back room is a crowded place where the Carolina Panthers are concerned. The three roster pieces look locked up despite Spencer Brown’s encouraging preseason, which undoubtedly leaves John Lovett on the chopping block in the not-too-distant future.
Lovett was seldom seen at the Patriots, generating one carry for zero yards and also failing to bring in a pass attempt. Much will depend on Brown’s injury status after he was carted off, but the Penn State product’s time with the Panthers could be running out.
