Which quarterbacks could the Carolina Panthers potentially target in the wake of Matt Corral and Sam Darnold’s injuries this offseason?

There was an enormous amount of concern surrounding Carolina Panthers quarterback Sam Darnold after he fell awkwardly during the team’s final preseason game against the Buffalo Bills. The quarterback was carted off and head coach Matt Rhule confirmed it was a significant high ankle sprain that is expected to keep him out for a lengthy period.

The Panthers had four quarterbacks vying for three positions just a fortnight ago. With Darnold now on the shelf and rookie Matt Corral on season-ending injured/reserve, just starter Baker Mayfield and P.J. Walker remain heading into the final round of cuts.

Rhule added that he feels comfortable about having Walker as the team’s No. 2 option until Darnold is ready to return. But the Panthers might also look at alternative options with so much at stake for the organization in 2022.

With this in mind, here are four quarterback options the Panthers could potentially target if they decide to give their backup plans behind Mayfield a boost.

Carolina Panthers could sign Brett Hundley

The Carolina Panthers might not need anything more than a short-term solution if Sam Darnold misses 4-6 weeks as expected. Baker Mayfield is the starter and has been relatively healthy throughout his career, with the signal-caller even playing most of 2021 with a torn labrum in his non-throwing shoulder.

If the Panthers feel like getting someone in briefly before Darnold comes back, then Brett Hundley might be a good option. The journeyman was cut recently by the Baltimore Ravens and could possibly occupy a position on the practice squad as an emergency option in case the worst happens to either Mayfield or P.J. Walker.
