Shi Smith – Carolina Panthers WR

What an offseason it’s been for former Shi Smith. When the wide receiver was arrested in Union County for gun and drug possession it was a wonder if we’d see the player in a Carolina Panthers uniform again.

When the training program began, Smith was potentially on the roster bubble and in danger of not making the final 53-man roster. Since then, the former South Carolina standout has arguably been MVP of the preseason.

Head coach Matt Rhule has spoken glowingly of the 2021 sixth-round pick even going as far as to say that Smith was a potential starter for the Panthers in the slot. With his emergence and the signing of Rashard Higgins, the wide receiver room is deep and full of talent.

One of the positives of Smith this offseason has been his availability. Being on the field consistently has meant the player can make his mark on the team and move up the depth chart.

Many touted Terrace Marshall Jr. as the player ready to break out in 2022. But the former LSU Tiger has once again struggled with injuries, something that has plagued the player since high school.

Smith has certainly made his way up the depth chart this offseason, culminating in a touchdown during Carolina’s preseason finale. And don’t be surprised if he makes a real impact this season.
