Carolina Panthers could claim Chris Streveler

After having an embarrassment of riches at the quarterback position in training camp, the Carolina Panthers boast just two fit signal-callers right now. Rookie Matt Corral is on season-ending injured/reserve with a foot injury and Sam Darnold looks set to miss multiple weeks with a high ankle sprain suffered in their preseason finale against the Buffalo Bills.

Baker Mayfield is the undisputed starter. He’ll likely be backed up by P.J. Walker, who is wildly inconsistent but knows the scheme and has been around the franchise for several years now.

If the Panthers decide that a better backup option is needed until Darnold comes back, then it might be worth examining Chris Streveler‘s production this offseason. The quarterback was nothing short of exceptional for the New York Jets in warmup games, but it wasn’t enough for him to secure a roster spot in the end.

Streveler spent the first two seasons of his career as a backup with the Arizona Cardinals. He has a live arm and nice mobility, but some footwork issues held him back from making a bigger splash.

If anything, Streveler’s consistency under center in recent weeks indicates strides are being made. But it would be difficult for the Panthers to replace Walker given how close he is with head coach Matt Rhule.

Had Darnold been out for longer, it would be a different story. But after a standout preseason, Streveler deserves a roster spot somewhere.
