Marquan McCall – Carolina Panthers DT

After an exceptional preseason, it was great to see Marquan McCall make the original 53-man roster. The Carolina Panthers moved quickly to acquire the defensive tackle in undrafted free agency, which was a tremendous bit of business given the impact he’s made in a short space of time.

McCall offers something a little different from what the Panthers already possess. He is a mammoth presence on the interior with tremendous athleticism, which saw the player become a stout force against the run and also generate pressure in opposing backfields consistently.

If there was one question mark regarding McCall, it’s that his good work was primarily against third or fourth-string defenders. Most of whom are looking for alternative employment after getting waived on Tuesday.

Whether McCall can produce similar influence in the face of top-tier offensive linemen in a competitive setting remains to be seen. However, he has earned the right to test himself against the league’s best after rising from obscurity into Carolina’s plans.

This might change if the Panthers find a pass-rusher that can help compensate for the loss of Haason Reddick in free agency. But the Panthers could also remove someone like Phil Hoskins and keep McCall around.
