Brandon Zylstra was the Carolina Panthers odd man out

It was always going to be difficult to secure a roster spot within the wide receiver room in 2022. Outside of Robbie Anderson and D.J. Moore, almost every other spot was up for grabs and it’s been fascinating to see some gifted players battle for position throughout the offseason.

In truth, there was always going to be one contentious decision. This came when the Carolina Panthers released Brandon Zylstra despite his dependability and impressive preparation period.

Zylstra caught the eye with limited targets in 2021. He was one of the most reliable pass-catchers for an offense that struggled overall, with his consistency on special teams something else that left a positive impact.

The former CFL standout made some splash plays during camp. But the trade for Laviska Shenault Jr. completely changed his outlook, making him the odd man out when the time for a final decision arrived.

Considering Zylstra’s track record and experience, it would be a shock if he was still around for the Panthers to stash on their practice squad. If he does clear waivers, then bringing him back is a no-brainer.

The Panthers will move forward with Moore, Anderson, Terrace Marshall Jr., Shi Smith, Rashard Higgins, and Shenault as their wideout options. A group that comes with real potential for growth with Baker Mayfield under center.
