Carolina Panthers select Andre Carter II
- Defensive End/Outside Linebacker | Army
Examining the Carolina Panthers’ depth chart as it stands, it’s hard to look at their edge rushing options with a great deal of confidence. If the likes of Yetur Gross-Matos and Marquis Haynes take advantage of additional playing time it’s a different story, but this is an area that could also get serious attention next year if things don’t pan out.
Brian Burns remains a foundational piece and should get a bumper new contract before next year’s draft. Much will also depend on the development of sixth-round selection Amare Barno after flashing during the offseason.
If other needs are addressed first, then someone like Andre Carter II comes with intrigue. The pass-rusher made a name for himself in 2021 with an astonishing 14.5 sacks and 17 tackles for loss, which no doubt grabbed the attention of NFL scouts ahead of what could be his final campaign in the college system.
Carter has tremendous explosiveness and has enough in his arsenal to counteract opposing offensive linemen. There are some questions about his bulk and whether more might be needed in the NFL, but the significant leap taken by the prospect last season indicates he’s on a steep uphill trajectory.
There is a sideline-to-sideline presence where Carter is concerned. One that could make him best suited to an outside linebacker role at the next level when push comes to shove.
