5 dream free-agent targets for the Carolina Panthers in 2023

Carolina Panthers could target Lavonte David
- Linebacker | Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Adding veteran linebacker Lavonte David would be an immediate upgrade alongside Shaq Thompson and would sure up the second level with a proven Super Bowl winner. Something the Carolina Panthers might need entering their fourth season without perennial All-Pro Luke Kuechly in 2023.
His knowledge of knowing what it takes on the defensive side of the ball to win a ring is much needed for the young Panthers’ defense. Although talented, this unit doesn’t have much in the way of experience when it comes to dealing with success.
David is an excellent cover linebacker. This was demonstrated by his covering of stud tight end Travis Kelce in the 2020 Super Bowl, doing a great job in the bump and run.
Physicality is a key skill set of David’s play. He wants to get in your face and make you work for every yard.
The former second-round pick out of Nebraska is still a good run defender. But he shines in coverage and that’s exactly what the Panthers need.
Given that David would be 34 years old during the 2023 season, this is not going to be a long-term solution to an ongoing complication. But if the Panthers are right on the cusp of contending by this point, it would help an untold amount.
