Cam Newton brings star power

If there’s one thing Jerry Jones cannot resist, it’s a star.

Cam Newton is certainly that.

This might not sound like a way to build a successful football team. But if you don’t think it will come into Jones’ thought process when contemplating Newton, then you haven’t been paying close attention to his approach as Dallas Cowboys owner and general manager.

Newton brings media attention and has an extremely loyal fanbase that idolized him from the moment he was taken No. 1 overall by the Carolina Panthers in 2011. It would be another difficult scenario for the player, but the Cowboys have $12. 4 million in salary-cap space remaining and could make him a tempting offer until Dak Prescott is ready to return.

After that, Newton’s leadership would be a major asset from a backup role.

This is a gamble, there’s no getting away from that. But Jones is renowned for taking risks on players that most of the league has turned away from for various reasons.

If Newton did join the Cowboys, they’d be the talk of the NFL. Something that would please Jones given how much the team’s chances took a hit with Prescott’s injury.

It’s something worth keeping an eye on. But the Cowboys need to act fast with a game against the AFC champion Cincinnati Bengals on the immediate horizon.
