Baker Mayfield – Carolina Panthers QB

It’s too early to be pressing the panic button where Baker Mayfield is concerned. However, the quarterback has to put some consistency together for an extended period against the New Orleans Saints in Week 3.

The Carolina Panthers made things more complicated than they needed to be with Mayfield during the offseason. Something that resulted in the quarterback developing chemistry on the fly with his teammates rather than getting everything ironed out in camp and the preseason.

There have been flashes of quality from Mayfield over the first two weeks. But hesitancy in the pocket, timing complications, and failure to convert effectively on third down are proving to be his undoing.

Mayfield is also being restricted by Ben McAdoo’s vanilla scheme. Although the batted passes aren’t helping all that much, either.

Sunday’s game against the New Orleans Saints is the perfect opportunity for Mayfield to set the tone. A divisional game at home when the chips are down is all the Oklahoma product might need to get his season back on track.

If Mayfield performs well versus a top defensive unit and the Panthers somehow win, then it might ignite this franchise to bigger and better things moving forward. Whether this is something they are collectively capable of is another matter.
