4 severe disappointments from Panthers loss vs. Cardinals in Week 4
By Preston Seyl
Carolina Panthers cannot rely on Baker Mayfield
The third quarterback under Matt Rhule looks to be another failed attempt at finding the long-term answer at the position. Baker Mayfield has looked awful so far with an overall grade of just 46.4 grade from Pro Football Focus, which is nothing short of abysmal for such an important position.
Mayfield is too short for the quick passing game and continues to get balls batted at the line. Defensive coordinators are exposing his size by mirroring him in the pocket and getting their hands up in passing lanes.
When his throws aren’t getting deflected by opposing defensive lines, his accuracy is shaky at best. Mayfield often overshoots his wide receivers, leading to turnovers that cost the Carolina Panthers in Week 4 against the Arizona Cardinals.
With a 15.3 QBR – 32nd in the NFL – Mayfield’s production has not been starting quarterback worthy. The former Oklahoma standout is playing for his career right now but is driving it into the ground with every passing game.
This is a quarterback-driven league. If you don’t have an elite signal-caller, you won’t be competing for a Super Bowl.
Rhule has had below-average to one of the worst quarterbacks over his three years in Carolina. If Mayfield doesn’t step up his game in a hurry, the head coach will soon regret his quarterback evaluations at the pro level.
