Baker Mayfield’s status is uncertain

Just when things couldn’t get much worse for Baker Mayfield, the quarterback was spotted in a walking boot following Sunday’s loss against the San Francisco 49ers. Something that saw him sit out the closing stages as P.J. Walker took charge under center.

Mayfield now faces a nervous wait to see if he’ll be well enough to go in Week 6 at the Los Angeles Rams. Despite the defending Super Bowl champions going through some turmoil during the early stages of their title defense, this is another significant challenge for the Carolina Panthers and one they would do well to get anything out of.

The signal-caller didn’t appear too concerned with the injury, claiming that he’ll be fine. And he deserves credit for fighting it out before Carolina eventually threw in the towel.

Everything that can go wrong, has gone wrong for Mayfield since his trade to the Panthers. This is not only hurting the team’s short-term chances of progression but also casting serious concerns about the player’s chances of ever becoming a starting-caliber quarterback again.

We are at the tipping point. One could argue that it’s gone way beyond that after a pathetic start to the campaign.

Mayfield’s injury could make things worse. It’s a wait-and-see situation in the coming days, but missing practice time is the last thing he needs right now.
