4 big takeaways from David Tepper’s presser after Matt Rhule’s firing
By Dean Jones
David Tepper was non-commital on Scott Fitterer
Another prominent feature throughout David Tepper’s presser was planning for long-term success. This also included questions about the future of general manager Scott Fitterer.
The front office figure has been relatively blame-free as Matt Rhule took the criticism. However, when asked about the prospect of Fitterer leading the Carolina Panthers during the upcoming head coaching hire process in 2023, Tepper was surprisingly non-committal regarding his future with the organization.
"“It’s a little premature to ask those questions. Scott is our G.M.”"
What Tepper was clear about moving forward is an improved balance and structure within the Panthers. Much was made about Rhule getting the final say on personnel decisions as part of his contract, which is a mistake the owner doesn’t plan on making again.
Although there was some obvious regret in Tepper’s demeanor, that’s not going to stop him from taking further risks in an attempt to get the Panthers where he envisaged they could go.
"“Listen, a lot of things in this game might make more sense to be more conforming in some ways. On the other hand, look, it’s about taking chances and taking risks at times in life. Sometimes things work out; sometimes you want to make another choice. You learn.”"
It would be a surprise to see Fitterer not given an opportunity to choose his own head coach and go from there. But much will depend on how Tepper perceives his time in the role so far.
