The Carolina Panthers’ defense has no help

There aren’t many games giving up 37 points where any team has a great chance to win. As bad as the offense has been, the Carolina Panthers defense let go of the rope against a San Francisco 49ers team that blew them out in the worst possible way.

Jimmy Garoppolo is a good quarterback but not a great one. A player who is going to make mistakes and give the defense a chance or two every game he starts.

Carolina’s unit has to do a better job and play with more pride. Even if their offense is continually letting them down, which has to be demoralizing and tiring in equal measure.

One could guess that this was due to the team perhaps giving up on Matt Rhule and signaling they were ready for a change. Something that was also recognized by David Tepper, who highlighted the decreased urgency as one of the primary reasons why the head coach was let go.

With defensive coordinator Phil Snow also removed from the equation, the defense will be led by Al Holcomb and interim head coach Steve Wilks. They are hugely respected and are sure to get this group singing from the same hymn sheet, but this will count for nothing if the offense cannot live up to its end of the bargain.

A new era daws for the Panthers. But it must be a collective effort from all three phases moving forward.
