P.J. Walker – Carolina Panthers QB

Heading into Week 2 of the preseason, P.J. Walker was arguably QB4 on the Carolina Panthers roster and could have been a week away from being cut. Fast forward to Week 6 and injuries to Matt Corral, Baker Mayfield, and Sam Darnold mean the signal-caller could start at the Los Angeles Rams.

Despite being 2-0 as an NFL starter, Walker does not inspire confidence. Although his athleticism and strong arm catch the eye on occasion, things can be quite chaotic and he has previous form for turning the ball over.

When he’s likely to be facing stud cornerback Jalen Ramsey this Sunday, turning the ball over is something you don’t want to do.

The Panthers do have Jacob Eason on the practice squad, a former five-star high school recruit that was a fourth-round selection in 2020 by the Indianapolis Colts. With Mayfield likely to miss a couple of weeks, Steve Wilks will have the option to elevate him as the team’s primary backup.

Moving forward, it remains to be seen if Walker has a future on the roster. As a graduate of Temple who played under Matt Rhule, questions were asked about whether or not he would have made the roster on other NFL teams.

It remains a high possibility that when both Mayfield and Darnold are ready to roll, Walker may be shown the door.
