4 Carolina Panthers on the chopping block after Matt Rhule’s dismissal

Rashard Higgins – Carolina Panthers WR
When Rashard Higgins was signed to a one-year deal in free agency. it was thought this move may have been a precursor for the Carolina Panthers trading for quarterback Baker Mayfield. The pair developed impressive chemistry during their time together on the Cleveland Browns and formed a solid relationship, which was expected to smooth the signal-caller’s transition to a different environment.
Higgins was projected to be a solid depth piece. When Mayfield was finally brought in during the run-up to training camp, it didn’t take long for this connection to resurface during outstanding stints in Spartanburg from the duo.
What’s come after that has been far less impressive.
Higgins was finally given an opportunity against the Arizona Cardinals after almost no involvement prior to that. But he inexplicably fumbled on his first touch.
Even with wide receiver Laviska Shenault Jr. inactive in Week 5, Higgins found himself in street clothes with Terrace Marshall Jr. given the opportunity. For once, we witnessed some solid play from the former LSU standout.
With the possibility that Mayfield will miss some time, it remains to be seen what role Higgins has in the coming weeks. But it’s almost guaranteed he won’t be back in 2023 whatever happens for Carolina’s remaining 12 contests.
