New England Patriots could trade for Robbie Anderson

A dark horse in the Robbie Anderson sweepstakes could be Bill Belichick and the New England Patriots. The legendary head coach has been an admirer of the wide receiver’s since his days at their divisional rival New York Jets.

During the offseason, it was also reported the Carolina Panthers were willing to listen to offers for the former Temple man and the Patriots were one of the teams linked with Anderson. Belichick had four years watching him up close and clearly feels liks he could offer something to a stagnant wideout room in New England.

Anderson himself even admitted in the build-up to the Panthers’ Week 9 matchup with the Patriots in 2021 that he was close to joining New England in free agency before opting to reunite with former college coach Matt Rhule. With his relationship seemingly souring in Carolina, don’t be surprised to see Belichick make another play.

The Panthers have a trade history with the Patriots, which could help smooth any upcoming negotiations. They worked out a high-profile deal for All-Pro cornerback Stephon Gilmore in 2021 and during the recent draft, Carolina traded with the New England to move up and selet Ole Miss quarterback Matt Corral.

There is a mutual respect where Anderson and Belichick are concerned. Whether it’s Mac Jones or Bailey Zappe, they’d benefit enormously from his presence on the outside.
