After Baker Mayfield suffered an ankle injury in Week 5, the Carolina Panthers were forced to move forward with P.J. Walker as their starter at the Los Angeles Rams. Another body blow for an organization going through yet more turmoil at football’s most pivotal position.
One could argue that the quarterback wouldn’t even be on the books had Matt Corral not suffered a serious foot injury during the preseason. But it represented an opportunity for the Temple product to put himself in the shop window for 2023 free agency.
However, it was clear from early on that offensive coordinator Ben McAdoo had no confidence in Walker. The Panthers relied on Christian McCaffrey heavily right out of the gate and the signal-caller completed just one pass beyond the line of scrimmage over four quarters.
This was nothing short of embarrassing all around. Especially considering Walker has shown potential to get the ball downfield, even if his accuracy is wayward at times.
McCaffrey’s trade could alter the way Carolina approaches things on offense. And there is a high chance the Panthers could be chasing the game looking at all the factors.
With that being said, taking Walker to throw for more than 159.5 passing yards at -114 (bet $114 to win $100) is a risky but tempting proposition providing the offensive line continues to provide stability.
