Which teams could potentially make a desperate move to acquire Carolina Panthers quarterback Baker Mayfield via trade before the 2022 deadline?

The once-promising outlook for Baker Mayfield following his trade to the Carolina Panthers now seems like a distant memory. Things didn’t go according to plan for the signal-caller after winning the starting job in training camp and a high ankle sprain saw him lose the No. 1 job to P.J. Walker after his exceptional performance in Week 7 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

This leaves Mayfield facing the prospect of backing up Walker. At least for the time being.

Interim head coach Steve Wilks stated it would be a new evaluation of every player in the wake of Matt Rhule’s firing. However,  things don’t look great for the No. 1 overall selection in 2018 all things considered.

With the deadline fast approaching, Mayfield was asked whether he’d be welcome to another trade before November 1. The former Oklahoma sensation took the diplomatic approach, stating his desire to be in Carolina, although those in power could be tempted if an offer comes along.

Not the way Mayfield envisaged his second chance going after being cast aside by the Cleveland Browns. Although extremely unlikely, here are three teams that could make a move if this scenario comes to fruition.

Rams could trade for Baker Mayfield

The defending Super Bowl champions are in some turmoil early in 2022. It’s not been the start many anticipated for the Los Angeles Rams after their memorable playoff run, with Matthew Stafford’s production coming under the microscope behind a porous offensive line.

This would be a bombshell, to put it mildly. But with only John Wolford backing up Stafford, trading for a more reliable option in the event last spring’s marquee arrival continues to struggle cannot be dismissed entirely.

Whether they would class Baker Mayfield as an upgrade to their backup options is another matter.
