Carolina Panthers gamble on Baker Mayfield shining without Matt Rhule

Things look somewhat bleak for Baker Mayfield right now. But all hope is not lost.

Any regression in P.J. Walker’s production moving forward after setting such a high bar could leave the Carolina Panthers back to Mayfield, gambling on the quarterback shining without the presence of previous head coach Matt Rhule.

Much has been made of Rhule’s decision to trade for Sam Darnold. According to Jeremy Fowler of ESPN’s recent feature, it appears as if the former Baylor man was the only one convinced this was the right thing to do.

Something wasn’t right early between Mayfield and Rhule despite some positive signs in training camp. The suspect play-calling and scheme management from offensive coordinator Ben McAdoo didn’t do him any favors, either.

Desperate times call for desperate measures. If confidence in Walker decreases, then the Panthers might decide to throw Mayfield back into the fire to see if the light finally comes on without Rhule completely controlling matters.

If it doesn’t work out, then Carolina can move on from Mayfield in free agency and focus their attention on finding a long-term solution via the 2023 NFL Draft. A sorry end to what was supposed to be the answer to the Panthers’ prayers of genuine progression this season.
