Frankie Luvu – Carolina Panthers LB

  • 2022 cap number: $3.48 million

Even though he’s spent a short period on the sidelines before making a welcome return in Week 7 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, it’s been an immense start to the season for Frankie Luvu. Something that’s already vindicated the Carolina Panthers’ decision to extend the linebacker this offseason.

Luvu has the natural instinct to make plays at will. Just why this didn’t occur with much regularity on the New York Jets is anyone’s guess, but the Panthers are getting the best out of the former Washington State star, who is now an integral part of their defensive plans.

While Luvu’s influence on the field is important, his growing stature within the locker room is another standout feature of his overall contribution. The energy he brings on a daily basis is incredible, something everyone else feeds off and relies upon when motivation is required.

If Luvu’s performance levels are maintained and his leadership improves, then there’s a high chance he’s extended again sooner rather than later. Much will depend on what a new head coach thinks of his talent, but one look at the tape dictates just how important the second-level defender is becoming to the franchise.

Carolina allocated $3.48 million of their 2022 salary cap to Luvu in 2022. Based on his outstanding opening to the campaign, it’s cheap at half the price.
