Carolina Panthers should consider T.J. Hockenson

Finding consistent production at the tight end position has been a notable struggle for the Carolina Panthers since Greg Olsen was at the peak of his powers. Ian Thomas and Tommy Tremble don’t look like the answer from a pass-catching standpoint, which could lead those in power into trade activity if they feel compelled to assist Steve Wilks in his title challenge.

The Detroit Lions had increased expectations on their shoulders this season after fighting hard in 2021. But things are heading down the usual path for Dan Campbell’s men en route to yet another high-end draft selection and plenty of concerns about their long-term aspirations.

One of their shining lights this season has undoubtedly been T.J. Hockenson. His ability to get open and provide an assured presence across the middle is something the Panthers lack from their current tight end options, with his dependability in the red zone another standout feature that cannot be overlooked.

Hockenson is under contract until 2024 after the Lions picked up his fifth-year option. They won’t want to part with one of their core pieces on offense, but acquiring extra draft assets for a team going nowhere fast cannot be ruled out, either.

This all comes down to how Carolina perceives Thomas and Tremble within their plans long-term. The Panthers must also decipher whether a 2023 draft prospect could provide assistance rather than trading away capital for Hockenson.
