Carolina Panthers have increased urgency

Many fans are embracing the tank and looking forward to the 2023 NFL Draft where the Carolina Panthers can finally get their franchise quarterback of the future. However, this notion isn’t sitting well with Steve Wilks and his players with so much football left.

Wilks took this job in the wake of Matt Rhule’s dismal tenure with a huge opportunity to stake a claim for the head coaching position long-term. It’s been inconsistent from a performance and results standpoint, but the culture within the locker room seems to be improving as he looks to return Carolina to the ethos that made them so successful in the 2010s.

Tanking might sound nice, especially given the wealth of draft assets the Panthers now have after trading Christian McCaffrey to the San Francisco 49ers. However, urgency in the building should increase exponentially after such a poor loss, with Wilks and others fighting for their own jobs in the coming weeks ahead of some potential landmark changes.

Turning things around might be almost impossible for Wilks right now. He made additional firings among Carolina’s coaching staff on Monday, but whether that’ll come with improvements on a short week remains to be seen.

Panthers fans are used to losing at this point. Just show some fight and go down swinging with a sense of heart that’s been seldom seen over the last three years.

Nothing less than maximum effort will do. If the Panthers can achieve this, then a second win for Wilks might not be too far behind.
