Baker Mayfield could join the 49ers

If Baker Mayfield and the Carolina Panthers go their separate ways in 2023, then the chances of him getting an instant starting job look bleak. His production last season and over the first five games of 2022 didn’t inspire much confidence, so accepting a backup role could be the best possible solution next year.

The former Oklahoma star probably knows this is the path he’ll be forced to take. So if a team like the San Francisco 49ers shows interest, it’s something Mayfield should consider.

San Francisco got a devastating blow to their hopes when Trey Lance went out with a season-ending injury pretty early on. Fortunately, their decision not to trade Jimmy Garoppolo worked out, with the veteran assuming command and currently managing games well for an offense that was further boosted by their trade for Carolina Panthers running back Christian McCaffrey.

Garoppolo is a free agent after the current campaign. So he’ll be using their remaining fixtures not only to boost the Niners’ playoff aspirations but also to put himself in the shop window ahead of free agency.

If Garoppolo leaves, then San Francisco needs a capable backup in the event Lance cannot stay healthy. Although risky, Mayfield could be a good option and his previous connection with McCaffrey wouldn’t hurt, either.
