4 biggest disappointments from Panthers loss at the Ravens in Week 11
By Dean Jones
Baker Mayfield – Carolina Panthers QB
Baker Mayfield was handed a golden opportunity to seize another starting chance thanks to P.J. Walker’s ankle complication. The quarterback’s been occupying a backup role after returning from injured/reserve, but fortune smiled in his favor on the road against a franchise he’s clashed with plenty during some memorable AFC North battles.
Mayfield was given a rough ride by the Baltimore Ravens’ defense throughout. But that does not detract from the countless opportunities he squandered with the game so close.
With a QBR of just 20.2 and two more interceptions without a touchdown, it was a big flop from Mayfield with the spotlight glaring once again. Something that could spell the end of his time under center with the Carolina Panthers.
One could point fingers at Ben McAdoo’s conservative play-calling. However, if the offensive coordinator had any faith in the Oklahoma product, he’d have opened things up like he’s done for P.J. Walker in recent weeks.
Steve Wilks was non-commital when talking about the starting quarterback next weekend against the Denver Broncos. Considering there are draft implications regarding Mayfield’s snap percentage and the fact he’s offered almost nothing when manning the plate, we could get one more look at Sam Darnold if Walker isn’t ready to return.
And that – considering what many envisaged when the trade for Mayfield was confirmed – is the most disappointing thing of all.
