Brian Burns – Carolina Panthers DE

The Carolina Panthers received a whopping offer from the Los Angeles Rams for stud defensive end Brian Burns. This consisted of two first-round picks and their 2023 second-rounder, but general manager Scott Fitterer resisted the urge to part ways with a core foundational piece before the deadline.

Although this was the right call to make considering Burns’ importance, it’s a move that’s going to cost the Panthers a substantial sum when it’s time for the former Florida State stud to begin negotiations on a new deal. Something that could arrive this offseason when the player enters the final year of his rookie contract.

Burns looks well on course for another career year and double-digit sacks for the first time. This, coupled with his emerging leadership and Carolina showing their hand regarding how much he’s valued, only adds further dollars to his potential demands.

Should Burns continue his outstanding form following the team’s bye week, then a record-breaking contract for players at the position cannot be ruled out. Carolina’s inability to generate meaningful pressure if it isn’t coming from the 2019 first-round selection only enhances his status on and off the field.

The Panthers will likely bolster their options in free agency or the draft. But they are also going to shell out an eye-watering figure to keep Burns around throughout his prime years.
