Steve Wilks’ future with the Carolina Panthers

Matt Rhule’s tenure as head coach was an embarrassing spell for the Carolina Panthers. Team owner David Tepper bet a substantial amount that the college program builder could continue this success at the next level, but bad personnel moves and an ethos not fit for the NFL meant the billionaire had no option other than to end this experiment way before his seven-year, $62 million deal came to a conclusion.

This left many wondering if the Panthers had any hope at all with morale low and the No. 1 overall selection in sight. However, the impact made by interim appointment Steve Wilks has restored pride, belonging, and belief in equal measure.

Wilks is an old-school figure who knows how to lead men. He’s returned Bank of America Stadium to the fortress it once was and there is growing momentum surrounding his claims to become the head coach beyond 2022.

This is dependent on how Tepper perceives matters. His decision-making has been erratic at best since buying the team from Jerry Richardson and there’s just no telling which way he’ll go based on recent history.

The former Arizona Cardinals head coach can do his chances the world of good by finishing the season strongly. Easier said than done, but Wilks has the full support of players and fans, who became disillusioned beyond measure when Rhule was calling the shots.
